January
2008
"I've handed in the ninth
Nightside novel; Just Another Judgement Day. There will be three
more, then that will be the end of the series. Though I still plan to write
short stories etc set in the Nightside. There's going to be an audio book
production of the first two Secret History books, and I'm currently
discussing a monthly comic book based on the first book, to be written by
me. I've also just handed in a Nightside novella, The Difference A Day
Makes, for an Ace anthology later in the year."
Regarding the hardcover release of the eight Nightside novel Simon added
this:
"Yes The Unnatural Inquirer is the first Nightside novel to debut in
hardcover, as will they all from now on."
Regarding the Nightside novels,
good news for UK readers! (taken from a press release)
"Solaris Books recently purchased the first six books in Simon R. Green’s
Nightside series for UK publication.
Solaris will publish Simon R.
Green’s first six Nightside books in three omnibus editions in mass-market
paperback, summer 2008.
Commissioning Editor Christian
Dunn said of the deal: “Simon’s Nightside books are amongst the finest urban
fantasies out there and it’s shocking that he’s not had a UK publisher for
them until now. We’re very quickly earning a reputation as a publisher of
quality dark fiction and the addition of Simon to our list will only enhance
that.”
August 2007
Simon says:
"A few more titbits of news. First; I've been invited to be master of
ceremonies at the 2008 World Horror Convention, at Salt Lake City. I shall
be making speeches, interviewing other guests, giving readings and
generally showing off all over the place. Should be fun.
I've sold another Nightside short story. This will appear in a new
anthology, (provisionally) titled Werewolves At Christmas. The
story is called LUCY, AT CHRISTMASTIME.
And I've sold comic book rights to the Deathstalker books. I've seen some
advance pages, and the art looks fantastic. More details on when it'll be
appearing, as and when."
April 2007
A message from Simon:
"Some good news to
share; it's official, I have sold film rights to the Nightside books. The
people involved are real fans of the series, and are hoping to make it a
film franchise. Of course, this being Hollywood, I'll believe it when I
see it, and not one moment before. The current position is, they have
taken an option for five years. That means, they have exclusive rights to
try and get a film off the ground, for five years. After that, they have
to renegotiate. Still, I met the main guy in Los Angeles, at last year's
SF Worldcon, and he seemed a very cool guy, with a lot of affection for
the Nightside and its characters.
Other news; the titles for the three Secret History books have now been
decided. They are, in order, The Man with the Golden Torc, Daemons
are Forever, and The Spy who Haunted Me."
December 2006
A message from Simon:
"I've finished the
latest Nightside book, (currently) titled The One and Only Unnatural
Inquirer, in which our reluctant hero John Taylor ends up doing a job
for the Nightside's very own scabrous tabloid. The funniest, scariest, and
I think most moving book in the series yet.
I'm now plotting the third Secret Histories book, (provisionally) titled From
Hell with Love.
And I've sold two Nightside short stories. An Appetite for Murder
will appear in Powers Of Detection II, and Some of These Cons go
Way Back will appear in Cemetery Dance, in the Summer. I swear,
I'm just a writing fool these days...
We are STILL this close to closing a deal over film rights to the
Nightside series. The contracts have been agreed, we're still waiting for
the lawyers on both sides to sign off on them."
July 2006

Issue #55 of Cemetery
Dance magazine is now available for pre-order; it contains Simon's
short story Razor Eddie’s Big
Night Out. Click on the picture for more details.
The seventh Nightside novel, Hell to Pay, has a tentative publication
date of December 2006.
Secret Histories
(start of a new trilogy), has a tentative publication date of May 17th
2007 in the UK.
The first Nightside omnibus
edition (aside from the SFBC editions) will be out September 5th in
the US; it's titled A Walk on the Nightside and includes the first
three novels.
June 2006
An update from Simon:
"Yes, still working hard. I'm currently two thirds through the
second Secret Histories book; Demons are Forever. And rehearsing
Caliban, for an open air production of The Tempest. Not
a lot in the way of news at the moment. The seventh Nightside book has
had its title changed to Hell to Pay. Apparently my original
title was 'too long to fit on the spine'. Sigh...
We're inching closer to selling film rights for the whole series of
Nightside books. I've had three inquiries already, that fell at various
posts, but the fourth is looking good. So cross fingers, legs, anything
handy."
#
Good news
from the people of GraphicAudio about Deathstalker audiobooks (for further
details, see the audio
book page): they have just finished up with the Deathstalker Honor
Episodes and they will go on to the next installment of the series.
" We're currently producing Deathstalker Destiny and the first
episode will be released in July 2006." They also have a Deathstalker
video available. Go check it out!
February 2006
A message from Simon:
"Just to bring you up to date; the Secret History series has now officially sold; a three book deal with my usual US and UK publishers. The first book,
Secret Histories is completed, and I'm now working on the second, Demons are
Forever. I've finished and handed in the seventh Nightside book, (currently) titled
And Follow Darkness Like a Dream. Two seperate groups have expressed an interest in turning the Nightside into a television series, but neither have reached the point of actually threatening me with money yet. My US agent has just taken on a sub-agent who specialises in negotiating media rights deals, to work out the media deal."
#
What are the Secret
History books about? Well now, Simon Says....
"If the Nightside was
me doing private eye novels, then Secret Histories is me paying tribute to
the James Bond novels, which I actually read before I was old enough to
get into the cinema to see the films. So get ready for Shaman Bond, the
very secret agent..."
August 2005
Well, Simon has survived
Worldcon."Very friendly, had a great time." He must have,
because I saw a website with panel quotes from Worldcon and the ones he
made were certainly suggestive...
#
The sixth Nightside book is
now officially called Sharper than a Serpent's Tooth and will be
out February 2006. "John Taylor still searches for the truth about
his mother's involvement with the creation of the Nightside. Other secrets
will also be exposed, including who really stole Merlin's heart."
Other good news is that Simon has signed a deal with ACE to write three
more Nightside novels!
"The sixth Nightside
book ends a particular story arc; the story behind John's mother and the
creation of the Nightside. John Taylor will be the main character of the
next three books, and further books. No real big surprise there, I suppose.
But certainly a great many other characters will not survive the
Apocalyptic events of Sharper Than A Serpent's Tooth. And those
that do survive may be terribly changed...."
#
I think most of you will
remember The Next Big Thing (TM) Simon has been talking about for some
time? Well, it turns out that The Next Big Thing is a novel called:
Secret Histories
"It's currently with my
US and UK editors. I read the first two chapters at Worldcon, and they
went down very well." More information will be posted when available.
#
There is a new interview
with Simon on the SFRevu website.
There is some interesting new material there. Click here
for a direct link.
February 2005

Simon will be attending
Interaction,
the 2005 Worldcon, 4-8 August, Glasgow
#
Great news for those
of you who wanted a copy of Shadows Fall but were never able to get
one: the
book is going back in print! It will be published this May by the
excellent publisher BenBella
Books as a trade paperback. The book will be the same as the previous
ROC edition, so no added extra's.
Simon says: "Shadows Fall is coming out again; hopefully with more of a splash this
time. I still think it's the best-written thing I've ever done."
#
About the Nightside.
Sometimes Simon's editor decides that one title is better than another, so
Time and the Nightside (#5) has been changed to Paths Not Taken.
"Yes, once again a Nightside book has had its title changed, on the grounds that
Paths Not Taken was just so much better. I'd already used it as a chapter title, so I had to agree. It's got a cracking cover...
The sixth book, and the last in the John Taylor cycle, is currently called A Mother's
Son, and I'm about half way through it at the moment. There will almost definitely be more Nightside books, as I'm having such a
great time writing them. Hex
and the City starts giving answers to the mysteries in John Taylor's life; such as the identity of his mysterious
missing mother, AND just who the Enemies are who've been trying to kill him
all his life. I've also just sold another Nightside short story,
Razor Eddie's Big Night Out, to Cemetery Dance magazine, and it should
appear at the end of this year. Nothing definite on the movie rights to the Nightside books; as always,
I'll believe it when they stick a fat cheque in my hand, and not before. Hopefully if the film
Constantine does well, they'll be looking for something just a bit similar..."
#
Finally
Simon says:"I hope everyone enjoys the new books as
they appear. Deathstalker Coda finally answers all the questions I raised in
the earlier seven books. The Next Big Thing (TM) is still being plotted."
October 2004
"I've finished the
fifth Nightside book, Time and the Nightside, which I've just been
told will be out
from Ace in September 2005. The Serious Nibble over film rights for
the Nightside books is still progressing. We're edging closer all the
time, but this is Hollywood, after all, so... I'll believe it as
and when, and not before."
#
For those of you who have
noticed the Nightside e-book Simon said the following.
#
"Apparently the Something From the Nightside e-book is an experiment, to see how it goes. More
may follow if it's successful. Some more news; there will be audio adaptations of
Deathstalker
Honour and Deathstalker Destiny, by the same people. The cast had such a great time doing them they bought the rights
themselves, so they could continue!"
May/June 2004
"I've just been
informed that the anthology Powers of Detection, from Ace, which
contains my
short story The Nightside, Needless To Say, will be
appearing in October 2004. Rather earlier than expected. Also, I will be
attending the SF Worldcon at Boston USA this year; and as always, I'd be
very happy to meet any of my fans there. I'm just putting the finishing touches to the proposal for my
Next Big
Thing, which will be a Really Epic Trilogy, with the overall title, The
Long Dying Day."
#
"Currently
working on Nightside five; working title, Time And The Nightside. Hex
And The City will
appear from Ace in March 2005. Still waiting to hear on Deathstalker
Coda."
March 2004
"The completed MS for
the fourth Nightside book has just gone into my publisher ACE.
It's called Hex and the City, it's the longest so far at around
250 pages, and it's full of
surprises. John Taylor gets hired by the Transient Being Lady Luck to
investigate the
origin and true beginnings of the Nightside itself. Along the way Taylor
discovers the identity
of the mysterious Enemies who've been trying to kill him all his life,
and finally comes face to
face with his long missing mother... Too early to say when it might be
out.
Nightingale's Lament is out in May, and the first three Nightside books
will be appearing from
the SF Book Club in an omnibus edition, called Everyone Comes to the Nightside.
I'm now putting together a proposal for my next big thing; a truly EPIC
trilogy that will outdo
everything I've done so far."
November 2003
"The Final And
This Time I Mean It Deathstalker novel, Deathstalker Coda, is now
finished and in the hands of my publishers. AND, I've written and sold
my first short story in twenty years. It's a Nightside story, The
Nightside, Needless to Say, and it will be appearing in the
anthology Powers of Deduction. I think it's one of the best
things I've done, and very scary. This is definitely Horror rather than
Fantasy.
I'm currently working on the fourth Nightside novel, Hex and
the City."
August 2003
"Just finished
appearing in two plays back to back; All's Well That Ends Well,
and She Stoops To Conquer. Now they're behind me, the final
Deathstalker book, now officially titled Deathstalker Coda,
is
well under way again. Publication dates for Deathstalker Return
is December '03 for the US, and April '04 for the UK. The first
Nightside book, Something From the Nightside, is finally out on
the shelves and doing very well. Which is good, as there are five more
to follow. Agents Of Light And Darkness is set for November '03,
with Nightingale's Lament in the Summer of '04. There will then
be three more, and
that's it, ending the cycle with the return of John
Taylor's mother to the Nightside. Hope everyone likes the Nightside book;
I had great fun writing it."
January
2003
Well, one
of the most anticipated books by Deathstalker fans everywhere,
Deathstalker Legacy, has
finally arrived, both in the UK and the US....
And it rocks!! Go read it and enjoy.
The cover of the UK tpb edition by the way (I quote another fan)
"is supposed to look like a 1950's pulp novel. If you look closely,
it's covered in nicks and scratches, which look like it's been well read.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that Owen's exploits
have become the stuff of myth." The US cover for Deathstalker
Legacy on the other hand, is very Romantic & Arthurian...
By the way: the site is (a bit later than planned...) now expanded with
a new page for the
Deathstalker Audio
Books. Go check it out!
Got some further info from Simon also:
"[..] just finishing the third of the Nightside books, Nightingale's
Lament. The first of these books will be out from Ace in the Summer,
and the other two at four month intervals. I hope people like these, as
I
want to write at least three more. Deathstalker Return is
finished and handed in, and should appear in the Autumn of 2003. The
next book will very definitely be the last word in the Deathstalker
Saga, and I hope to finish it at the end of this year."
September
2002
"Drinking Midnight Wine will
be out in mass paperback in the US in July '03. Deathstalker Legacy
has been picked up by the US SF Book Club. Deathstalker Return
is finished and has been handed in, and will probably appear in the
Winter '03. I'm currently working on the third Nightside book; Nightingale's
Lament." Latest news is that the UK mass market paperback for Drinking Midnight Wine
should be available in October.
August
2002
From Simon:
"The official release dates for Deathstalker Legacy are
December 2002 for the UK,
January 2003 for the US. Both will be hardcovers. The first of the
Nightside books should be out in the
US early Summer 2003. I've almost
finished Deathstalker Return, and should be handing
in the MS in September."
June
2002
"The writing continues. Deathstalker Legacy is currently still being copy-edited, but as far as I know,
no further changes in publication date are expected, in US or UK. I'm now 400 pages into Deathstalker
Return, and hope to be finished about August/September. There is going to be an audio adaptation
of the Deathstalker books. I will not be reading it myself, alas, but they've promised to get me a Real
Pro voice to do it. They've bought the rights to the first two books; if they sell well, then...
Drinking Midnight Wine is currently the second best selling trade paperback in the US; only beaten
by Lord of the Rings. If you're going to be beaten by anything... DMW has also been taken up by the
SF Book Club, the first of my books to make the grade, and is listed as the "Editor's Choice."
Got a really nice cover, too. The first three Nightside books have been sold to Ace. (My old stamping
ground.) First is Something From The Nightside. Second is Agents of Light and Darkness. The third
was going to be titled Do Lemmings Sing The Blues, but my editor said No, very firmly. So it will
now be titled Nightingale's Lament. These are short books, around the 200 page mark, and were a
whole lot of fun to write. I think they contain some of my best work to date. If these sell, I have at
least three more Nightside books plotted, and ready to go. On the TV side, things remain frustrating.
STILL no word on Hawk & Fisher. Interest has been expressed in Blue Moon Rising ("This could
be the new Shrek!") and the Nightside books, but as yet no-one's actually got around to threatening
me with large amounts of money. I just finished appearing in Richard III, in the open air of the
courtyard at Farleigh Castle. I played Catesby, Richard's fixer, and had a great time, even if the
weather wasn't all that it might have been (translation; it rained four nights out of six.) Wonderful
setting, though, very atmospheric. Future plans; when the new Deathstalker series is Finally
finished, I will be working on a new epic fantasy trilogy, working title; The Long Dying Day. Featuring
Princess Belladonna and the Simultaneous Kid. Promises to be lots of fun."
January
2002
"As
to Blood and Honour and Down Among The Dead Men, my agent
is currently talking with ROC
about getting them back into print soon. Then, hopefully, a US reprint
of Shadows Fall...
The Hawk & Fisher TV series is STILL with Paramount in the US;
they haven't said Yes and they
haven't said No, even thought it's been
almost three years now. Hopefully the success of LOTR will persuade them
to make a decision. The biggish news is... that if all goes well, from
2002 on, I should be publishing two books a year. As well as the three
Deathstalker books, which are contracted and signed
for, ACE have just
made an offer for a new series of short novels, the Nightside series.
These are modern
day fantasy novels set in London, featuring a private
eye who operates in the Twilight Zone. The first
two books are completed,
Something from the Night Side and Agents of Light and Darkness.
I'll start work on the third, (probably to be called Do Lemmings Sing
the Blues?) after I finish Deathstalker Return, which I'm
currently well into. Now, there isn't a contract yet, only a firm offer.
It could still all
go wrong, so fingers and everything else crossed.
These will be short novels, around 200 to 300 pages,
and I had a hell of
a good time writing the first two. I hope to do at least six, and maybe
more if there's a
good audience response."
October
2001
"Deathstalker
Legacy is now finished, and handed in. It runs about 700 pages in
MS, and is essentially Deathstalker; The Next Generation. It's set about
200 years later, when The Terror finally arrives. And nobody's ready for
it. Most of the original characters are dead, but some are still around.
And you'll be surprised who... and how. No date as yet, for UK or US.
However, it is the first of three books, after
which THERE WILL BE NO
MORE DEATHSTALKER BOOKS. And this time, I mean it. Shadows Fall
is out in the UK this month. It was always the best written of my books,
and I have very fond feelings for it. Hopefully it'll find a larger
audience this time. No US second edition, as yet. Anyone in the US who
wants to see it might like to write (polite) letters to my US publisher
asking to see it... Drinking Midnight Wine is out in
the UK in November, but not until early next year in the US. Probably
February. HB in the UK, TPB in the US."
July/August

Some
publishing dates from Simon....
"Beyond The Blue Moon comes out as a UK paperback on June
14. Shadows Fall is a UK pb on October 11th, with a marvellous
cover of Jack Fetch kicking Warrior of the Cross arse, and my next book,
Drinking Midnight Wine, will be a Hardback and large format
paperback on November 15. No US dates as yet, I'm afraid."
Also a sad personal tiding: Simon's father passed away last February and
for those of you who're interested, click on the link to read a short In
Memoriam by Simon.
February
2001
Good
news for those of you who are still looking for a copy of Simon's out of
print/stock fantasy books!
Gollancz/Orion will be publishing new editions of Blood And Honour
and Down Among The Dead Men, as well as Shadows Fall, over
the next eighteen months. No US deal yet, alas.
January
2001
"Drinking
Midnight Wine is set to appear in the UK in the late Summer 2001.
The US edition shouldn't be much later than that. There will be one more
novel set in the Forest. You may remember that King John was taken into
the embrace of the Lady of the Lake, as a form of penance, because he
would be needed in the future... However, that is very much on the back
burner. I'm currently past the 100 page mark in the first chapter of Deathstalker
Legacy. It's going to be another long one. There will then be one
more Deathstalker book, and that will be it. Mind you, I've said that
before... Basically, we've all seen too many series that went on
too long, and just trailed away to nothing. I am determined that's not
going to happen with me. My US publisher put a LOT of pressure on me to
come up with another Deathstalker book, but in the end what decided me
was the single dangling plot thread I had left over after Book Five. I
knew what The Terror was, but there was no way to tell you in Book Five.
Mind you, when you find out..."
## (older news) ##
Drinking Midnight Wine, Simon's next book to be published, will
not appear from ROC before early 2002....
Simon delivered the final draft in November 2000 (both to ROC and
Gollancz), but Laura Anne Gilman (ROC-editor) explains it as follows:
"Sorry -- early 2002, in trade paper format. We'd have put it
in schedule earlier, but there are so many great books coming out in the
end of the year, we didn't want anyone to get crowded-out! But
trust me, it's well-worth the wait. I honestly couldn't stop
reading the manuscript he handed in". Though her reasoning is
sound, I do hope the UK-edition from Gollancz will appear sooner!
October
2000
Some
news from Simon for the short story readers among you:
"An old short story of mine, Manslayer, is being reprinted
in a new anthology, Swords Against the Millennium. Ed. Mike Chin,
publisher Alchemy Press. Due out Oct/Nov. Most specialist shops should
be able to get it, if not try my old friends at the Andromeda
Bookshop. Manslayer was written
back in 77, and sold in 78. My first professional sale. It appeared in a
little-seen magazine Airgedlamh, and was never seen again. I'm still
very fond of it, which was why I agreed to Mike Chin reprinting it. Give
it a try."
September
2000
First
some writing news: Drinking Midnight Wine is almost finished
according to Simon. Of course then comes the editing, proofreading and
corrections stage, but it could be good news for you Deathstalker fans,
because the next scheduled project SHOULD be the new Deathstalker book....
Simon did after all attend Fantasycon, looking somewhat tired according
to one report: probably due to jetlag from his CHICON trip (where his
luggage was lost for two days). At Fantasycon he, among other things,
signed advance UK copies of Beyond the Blue Moon (if anyone would
like a signed copy, one should contact the Andromeda
Bookshop in Birmingham, they probably
have some left....). Also look at the Haw
& Fisher page for the UK/US BtBM
cover mystery...
About conventions: I can hereby say that Simon will NOT be attending
Novacon; in fact he told me that he will probably keep his con
attendences down to Worldcon and Fantasycon for the time being (if I
learn otherwise, I'll place it here). Finally Simon also said the
following: "My publisher is setting up a series of signings here in
the UK in October onwards, mostly in the Forbidden Planet chain of
shops."
## (older news) ##
Well, aside for an autographing session Simon apparently also held a
reading of the opening chapters for Beyond the Blue Moon at
CHICON. And to quote someone who attended: "It's gonna be GOOD."
For those interested: I've (temporarily) placed his "report"
on the Hawk
& Fisher page.
For you British fans: Simon has registered himself as attending FANTASYCON
2000 (8-10 September), but since it so
closely follows CHICON I'm not positive he'll actually be there (but you
never know)...
August
2000
Apparently
Simon survived his root canal surgery because what do we find when
checking the CHICON2000
site?
Autographing: Simon R. Green
On: Friday Sept. 1st, 10:00 to 11:15
Room: Fan Concourse
So good luck to you fans who're going!
May
2000
"I'm
currently well into Drinking Midnight Wine. It's light and
charming mad magical, which is bloody hard work to write... I've got a
TV sit-com out doing the rounds at the moment, and I'm also working on a
stage play; a cheery upbeat piece about why so many creative people
commit suicide. It's called Listening for the Bullet. On top of which
I'm rehearsing Polixines in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale, for an open-air
production in July (just after root canal surgery, which I am NOT
looking forward to). Assuming I survive all the above, I'm planning to
attend the World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago, at the end of
August."
April
2000
The
publication dates for Beyond the Blue Moon are known!
Hardcover - 352 pages (28 September, 2000) Victor Gollancz SF; ISBN:
0575070455
It can be ordered from amazon.co.uk.
Apparently, there will also be a simultaneous paperback release, which I
don't quite believe, but we'll see... The US publication date is set for
November 2000 (ROC, paperback). It is interesting to see though that the
UK publisher has enough fate in this book to bring it out in hardcover
first. I'm starting my own personal countdown...
February
2000
"Thought
you might like to know my next book isn't going to be Ghosts of
Future Past (a.k.a. Ghosts of Future Lovers) after all;
instead I'm writing a different modern fantasy, called Drinking
Midnight Wine. The plot just muscled in and took over... Beyond
the Blue Moon is still set to appear this summer. Then Drinking
Midnight Wine, then The Search for Owen Deathstalker; Deathstalker
Legacy. Owen Deathstalker is dead... but his story isn't over yet."
December
1999
"I
have just finished and posted off my latest novel; Beyond The Blue
Moon. Should be out in Summer 2000. My next project is a modern day
fantasy romance, Ghosts of Future Lovers. And after that, Book
One of The Search for Owen Deathstalker; Deathstalker Legacy. And
if you're wondering how the hell I'm going to work that... for the
merest hint, see Deathstalker Destiny, US edition, page 419, line
38 (UK edition, page 471, line 25). I don't just throw these things in,
you know.... And when people find out what The Terror really is, they're
going to freak..."
November
1999
"I'm
in the last chapter of Beyond the Blue Moon, which hopefully will
be finished by the end of this year, and appear in Summer 2000. It stars
Hawk and Fisher AND Rupert and Julia. Plus a sprinkling of old familiar
faces. Next up is a fantasy comedy, Ghosts of Future Lovers, to be
followed by a return to the Deathstalker universe. Set some time in the
future from those books, when The Terror finally arrives."
"I'm still waiting for news on a TV series based on the Hawk &
Fisher books. Paramount in the US expressed a definite interest, and
then fell silent. I'm told this is standard operating procedure in
television."
July
1999
"I'm
currently about half way through a sequel to Blue Moon Rising,
called Beyond The Blue Moon. This starts with Hawk & Fisher's
last adventure in Haven, and why they have to leave in one hell of a
hurry. Hawk and Fisher then go to the Forest Kingdom, to investigate the
murder of King Harald. And then... a lot of weird shit happens.
Department of no surprise at all. There is a connection between Hawk and
Fisher, but not necessarily the one everyone seems to think. I can say
this; Rupert and Julia will not be going to the Forest Kingdom."
